Comprehension and Vocabulary:
Comprehension is thinking, understanding words and concepts. A new way of understanding for me is the way Pearson and Gallagher state that comprehension bridges the new to the known. That is the way we learn. That is why it is important for a child to read good books. This will develop their vocabulary, increase their knowledge and come to understand others better. Engaging the kids in reading is very important. Reading groups and other activites can help them understand the concept and vocabulary. To help my son understand his readings we would do fun activites to encourage him. He loves camping so we would make a tent and read in it. He enjoys that alot.
In the chapter it states that schemata is like a jukebox. Once you press for a song, a mechanism gets activated and searches for that particular song. When we have no prior knowledge of words it makes comprehension poor or even non existent. The important part of reading comprehension and vocabulary is when the reader, the text and the message come together.
